Spanish wines fly around the world thanks to Félix Solís
With the reactivation of air traffic, national and international airlines once again become one of the best showcases for our country's wines
On a plane trip, every detail is important. The selection of wines served on board is one of those details that is not left to chance. With the gradual reactivation of air traffic, the preparation of the wine list is also restarted. The airlines hire the best sommeliers and invest millions of dollars to offer the best wines. Spanish wines have come to occupy, together with the French, the favourite positions of these aerial cellars.
Reaching this outcome has required many years of work and the growth of internationally recognised prestige by Spanish companies such as Félix Solís Avantis. The winery group occupies a privileged place in the wine lists of national and international airlines, through its banners Felix Solis and Pagos del Rey. It has its own wineries in the main Spanish DOs: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Valdepeñas, La Mancha and Toro.
Wine offered on an air route becomes a unique country brand ambassador, a mobile international showcase, which is why it is such an important segment. It is not surprising that companies like Iberia include in their menu a small selection of quality Spanish wines of different denominations. Since 2015 it is possible to enjoy, both on long and short-haul flights, the company's wines such as Castillo de Albai Crianza (DOCa Rioja), Viña Albali (DO Valdepeñas), Condado de Oriza Crianza (DO Ribera del Duero), Blume Verdejo Selección (DO Rueda) or Arnegui Crianza (DOCa Rioja).
The work of the international commercial departments of the group has made it possible for Spanish wines to go beyond the borders of Europe in recent years, a position traditionally reserved for French or Italian wines. British Airways is one of the pioneers in choosing Spanish wines on its menu from internationally recognised brands such as Viña Albali. The airline has been consecutively awarded the prestigious 'The Business Traveler Cellars in the Sky Awards' in recent years.
Another important international airline that includes the Spanish wine of Félix Solís Avantis on the onboard menus is the Russian company Aeroflot, one of the oldest in the world. Travelers flying to long-haul destinations can find two of their most renowned wines, Viña Albali and Casa Albali.
They can also taste good Spanish wine on domestic and international flights of Asian companies such as Vietnam Airlines, UTair or Rossiya Airlines. Félix Solís Yáñez, President and CEO of Félix Solís Avantis, highlights the importance of leading the airline market: “There was a time when finding a Spanish wine on the menu of an international airline was impossible, but thanks to our prestige and work, we have achieved that today our brands are a first choice in flights around the world. Air traffic is expected to return to normal levels in the coming years, so our intention is to continue introducing our wines on more airlines to bring the best flavour of our country to the skies, with special attention to the Asian market, where we are a pioneer winery. “
